Within the European theatre, NATO has supported the European project of integration. It is guided by the belief that Europe as a strong and cohesive unit will provide an additional leverage in consolidation the trans-atlantic relations. How ever, EU NATO relations are now facing several challenges. Differences in approach in addressing the security problems have complicated the issues. The EU, through suffering from and east west, divide is demanding more autonomy in security and military matters outside NATO. The Atlanticists, on the other hand, have argued over the duplication of any security arrangement other than NATO.
